From unhousebroken to toilet trained

300-chairToilet training Gizmo has been a long process. But then again she had a long way to go. In four months, she’s gone from occasionally using the litter box (preferring the bathtub, sink, bathroom rug, and even a dustpan) to using the toilet flawlessly.

Yesterday, she made another big step. I punched out the third ring of the CitiKitty training seat. Now there’s a 5′ x 7′ oval hole in the center of the catseat exposing the water in the toilet bowl below. A 2-inch wide round rim of flushable litter circles the toilet.

According to CitiKitty’s training manual, the toilet-training process ordinarily takes around four weeks. This is at the rate of one ring per week. (Removing rings widens the hole in the litter box-style training seat.) (more…)

Throw the Dog a Clone

300-police-dogsThe underwear bomber fallout is far from over. Panties are in a twist. Airport security is in question. Extreme and controversial safeguards are being contemplated around the globe. Flying will never be the same. But South Korean scientists may be on to something—an interesting alternative to the full-body scan—a full-body sniff.

The world’s first team of cloned, drug-sniffing police dogs was unleashed in South Korean airports last year. Now, scientists are back to work. This time, engineering the explosive-sniffing kind.

According to english.sina.com, the Sooam Biotech Research Foundation used the genetic makeup of a K9 named Quinn to make the carbon-copy canines. The German Shepherd first shot to fame after bringing a 30,000-person manhunt to a close in just 20 minutes after it found the body of a missing child. (more…)
