You’re Fired!

Saturday, February 20th, 2010

IMG_0419In two short words made famous by Donald Trump, Gizmo fires her stylist. And why not? The Donald has fired for less—though obviously not his hairdresser.

What this time? This cut makes her butt look fat.

In seriousness, the other day my cousin asked why I get my cat’s hair cut. For one, she starts scratching as her coat grows in, creating sores. Also, she does not like to be brushed and Persians have a hard time managing their coats by themselves.

Every time she does go in for a groom though, it’s like taking home a tiny little stranger. She looks so different, and so much smaller, it takes some getting used to. Sometimes it’s even hard not to laugh.

Fashion forward as always, this time she looks like she’s wearing showgirl-style costume, plumes on her hips. Her hair is shaved up so high on the back of her neck, her flat face resembles a plate. Big and round in front, a sliver from the side.

Another time, she looked like a rocker with a mullet and rat tail. And another, as outdated as Queen Elizabeth I.

But a few days after every haircut something strange starts to happen. She starts looking like herself again. Is it just me getting used to it? Or, perhaps my father’s theory is correct: the difference between a good and bad haircut is about three days.

I’m Dreaming of a Re-gift Christmas…

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

300-mulletPictured: Gizmo with her once-prized possession, the Leopard tunnel. Note: This picture was taken soon after Gizmo had an altercation with her hairdresser. Hence, the mullet and MC Hammer pants.

The internet is abuzz with re-gifting rules and etiquette for humans. So, how do these social standards apply to pets?

The good news is: if you have a particularly finicky feline that turns its nose up at nine out of 10 gifts, then loses interest in the ‘acceptable’ 10 percent of presents within a month, the rules are much looser.

Not only can you re-gift a cat gift, you can give it to the same cat twice. That is, if you have taken it out of circulation and hidden it away for at least two months prior re-gifting. Just ask Martha Stewart. (more…)

Last-Minute Stocking Stuffers

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

meowlingualEven if you get everything your greedy little heart desires for Christmas, there’s always some lucky dog (or cat) out there who’ll get more than you. Here’s some last-minute gift ideas for your pet.

What did you say, again?
Most pets know how to speak their mind. Still, one Japanese company is trying to make it easier than ever. Brainchild of Takara Tomy, an electronic translator for cats and dogs hit the market in style: the Meowlingual and Bowlingual.

Yes. I said translator. The innovative tech gadget measures the intonation levels of cat cries and dog barks, then puts them in the corresponding human category of emotion.

However, to use the Meowlingual, you’ll have to first learn Japanese. But an English version of Bowlingual is available in the States.

Who knows, after opening this years Christmas gifts your pet might even be able to thank you.

On a real tight budget?
Iphone apps to the rescue: Pet Notebook: $2.99. While Fifi or Fido might be more appreciative of a plate full of food, this iphone app is a practical gift for pet owners. Aside from storing precious photo galleries, users can use the app to store important information like microchip numbers and medications.

300-all-dayWe’ve all heard the term: when the cat’s away the mice do play. Ever wonder what your cat does while you’re away?

One way to find out is get an electronic watch dog: the Pet’s Eye View digital camera. The 4.5-oz device fastens to any collar wider than 3/8 of an inch, and is both Mac and PC compatible. Compact, it’s a hair more than 2-inches tall by 2-inches wide.

The interval timer can be set to snap shots at one-, five- and 15-minute intervals. Short on space, it only stores around 40 .jpgs. So, the one-second setting will barely give you enough time to get out the door, while the 15-minute interval spans approximately 10 hours. Plenty of time to see some shenanigans. (more…)
